In 1996 a project was started by the university San Nicolás of Hidalgo to initiate a better chance for a sustainable regional potters trade. A group of potters went to museums of Michoacán to study the techniques of their ancestors. After one year of trial and error they were able to produce ceramic vases and other historical pieces of such a high quality, that they had to
alter the measures, in order not to make forgeries. This very special kind of production ( al negativo) is practised only in Michoacán and could as yet only be admired in museums. As they were baked only with about 600° C. they were not totally watertight (such as "terracotta"). We are glad to have found a solution for this problem, so we can make the vases waterproof on demand. With our activities we intend to support some of those families who try to make a better living, and to help saving a part of Mexican culture. Each one is a unique piece!
